Because services and availability can change, it is sensible to check the official railway system rather than relying on old travel information found online.
The Train Can Get Busy
The scenic railway is not simply a tourist attraction.
It is also part of Sri Lanka’s working railway network.
That means the experience can become busy, particularly on popular sections and services.
Sri Lanka Tourism itself notes that the section towards Ella can be crowded at certain points of the journey.
This is worth knowing before you arrive with an expectation of having an empty carriage and an uninterrupted view.
Sometimes you will get a quiet seat beside a window.
Sometimes the carriage will feel much more lively.
Both are part of travelling by train in Sri Lanka.
